アドブロック+ – 私はライトゼロを感じている

Recommendation: ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

アドブロック+1 puts the “noise” in “vapornoise” – harsh noise, that is. In contrast to vapornoise artists whose amusicality is rooted in the usage of television samples and chopped-and-screwed production while still being listenable, 私はライトゼロを感じている2 is Merzbow software-destruction at its purest form. This album is better viewed as harsh noise influenced by vaporwave: the connection to the vaporwave scene is mostly due to the utilization of faux-Asian language and new wave sampling. Tracks are firmly rooted in staring-at-the-sun eardrum abuse designed to be as painful and punishing as possible3 rather than to attempt at evoking nostalgia, ironic or otherwise.

私はライトゼロを感じている begins with a Rickroll. Yes, an eight-minute long, fuck-as-all-hell sample of Rick Astley’s (in)famous “Never Gonna Give You Up.” It’s ballsy to say the least, especially in 2013 when Rickrolling had played itself out, if hadn’t already half a decade ago; hell, the song title translates as “Diana Ross sped up.” Whether it’s asinine or clever will be totally left up to the individual listener, but then again, harsh noise is – by definition – sadomasochistic. Most of these samples are not the static single-tempo screw that vaporwave/vapornoise typically utilizes, but a constant turning up and down of playback, like constantly messing with the RPM on a vinyl turntable. Each song is highly percussion-based, with the end to “ジェフハンドガン” going straight breakbeat.

There’s so much static and obfuscation going on here that only those listeners most interested in noise music ((or insanity) would gain something from this release. 私はライトゼロを感じている rather frequently lapses into total chaos, and by the very nature of this new wave sample-based noise music, the tracks do not quite “stand out” in any meaningful way. Taken as a gestalt, 私はライトゼロを感じている is an intense and occasionally stimulating listen, even if the replay value is dubious.4 Take from it what you will.

It has the ability to summon headaches in the listener… but who asked people to be crazy enough to try vapornoise anyway? S.uspected H.ippie I.n T.ransit…

Track 3 is actually funny, but Track 4 might be a little bit too creepy, almost scary for some listeners though.

Track 5: dreadful. Brings your anxiety levels to the peak. Or not.

Track 7: satan’s real job. Possibly himself actually drilling someone’s hard skull with his hellish drilling machine in this one. Thank God not mine… ツ
