香港黑手黨 – 上升

Do your ears hurt? Good. 上升1 is the debut EP by the anonymous artist 香港黑手黨.2 This HVRF release is a mixture of power electronics, hardvapor, and jungle music in a distorted mess of six tracks. The confluence of hardvapor and noise (hardvapornoise?) almost entirely lapses into the “noise” part of the equation, which is only saved by the ubiquitous presence of high-tempo percussion layered throughout the mix. The extreme brickwalling on all tracks is reminiscent of アドブロック+, whose noise remix of Rick Astley’s “Never Gonna Give You Up” proved one of the most love-it-or-hate-it tracks of 2013. There’s none such flippancy on 上升: this release is a surprisingly serious work, considering the overly-macho appearance of many HVRF albums. The accompanying text is a call-to-action for “the children of farms and mothers who lost their land” to sing as a great mass against the out-of-touch townies and slothful persons. Intense and worth checking out.
