ANXIETY ONLINE – FEAR

Recommendation: ☀☁☁

ANXIETY ONLINE is a wonderfully evocative name, and FEAR is a wonderfully evocative album title in all its simplicity. This is the third release ever for HVRF, one of two main forces in the hardvapour underground (the other being Antifur); the label purports to be from Prip’yat, Ukraine, which is the location of the Chernobyl disaster. FEAR is accompanied by text that describes a cubicle hell in which an office worker’s day slides into a mess of missed conferences, deleted files, and forgotten projects that are due right now – culminating in his termination (literal and metaphorical) by his boss.

FEAR takes up the mantle of industrial techno from which hardvapour takes heavy influence. Its seven tracks are filled with techno beats rooted in four-on-the-floor (for the most part) house style with exceptionally distorted electronic leads. Early hardvapour generally focused on rave culture and aesthetic, which FEAR also utilizes – tracks such as “PRIVACY BREACH (UNREGISTERED HYPERCAM2)” and “LIVE TECH SUPPORT CHAT” have an old-school 90s dance atmosphere. The latter song also has a bit of an old-school cyberpunk video game feeling to it, like what would be played in a film adaption of the matrix in William Gibson’s Neuromancer.

Check this one out if you’ve listened to the main hardvapour releases (e.g. Hardvapour., Vaporwave Is Dead) and are looking to dive into some hidden gems.
