AOTW | 18 December- 24 December: 猫 シ Corp. & Stereo Component – Ocean Beach

Fortune 500 is one of the codifying albums of vaporwave, having pretty much established the production and compositional techniques used in sample curation and late night lo-fi. One such album is Ocean Beach, a collaboration between 猫 シ Corp. and Stereo Component. 猫 シ Corp. is one of the most recognizable artists in the realm of hypnagogic sample curation that evokes the sense of dreamy nostalgia often discussed in the vaporwave community, and they continue to release music on labels such as Naughty Night Records. Stereo Component is an alias of future funk artists YUNG BAE, although he seems to have retired this particular project as the last release from Stereo Component was 2014’s Coastal Nostalgia on Ailanthus Recordings.

Ocean Beach combines hypnagogic drift with sample curation, which might surprise fans of YUNG BAE (although likely not any of 猫 シ Corp.). In twelve tracks in twenty-three minutes, it seeks to take listeners to that mental zone of the 80s and 90s that the listeners may or may not have even been alive to experience yet finds evocative just the same. Although the album itself is no longer available for download through Fortune 500, it may still be accessed through the vaporwave Ultra Guide.
