チェスマスター – 真の愛

Recommendation: ☀☁☁
チェスマスター’s1 debut album bares some hints to the experimental production style with which the moniker is now synonymous. Although mostly a standard 骨架的-esque release of narcotic soundtracks, 真の愛2 also utilizes PA-speaker vocal samples (e.g. “を作成中”), blissed-out percussion (e.g. “サマーナイト”), and understated washes of haze (e.g. “ナイト”). Each チェスマスター features a long, winding closing track, and 真の愛 is no different: “王手” is a romantic classical piece juxtaposed with indistinct voices with audible musical cuts that makes for a faintly dizzying experience.
The first and last tracks are nigh-identical bookends: simply a tempo-shifted easy-listening sample with digital beeping. “発見 チェック” is the album’s highlight: an ambient song with more indistinct voices and rain sounds added to the background. 真の愛 doesn’t quite explore the “love” concept of its translation too much, but there are occasional tracks such as this one and “王手” that evoke the feeling of watching a late-night romantic drama unfold, alone or otherwise.
