猫 シ Corp. – OASYS 博物館

OASYS 博物館1 is one of, well, quite a few albums by 猫 シ Corp.2, whose various collaborations and features – in addition to solo material – amount to over seventy releases since Global Catwork dropped in the summer of 2013. Many of these releases swim about in the realm of “hypnagogic drift,” a style of swirling, mostly ambient or downtempo music made to elicit a dreamlike atmosphere, but without being as heady as dreampunk or futurevisions with reliance on straightforward sampling. OASYS 博物館 is no exception, featuring the vaporwave classics of easiest of the easy listening and muzak presented in a minimally unedited form.
The sixteen tracks on OASYS 博物館 are a lot, and even more so with regards to 猫 シ Corp.’s extraordinary discography. Those who are looking for a simple, non-committal vaporwave album without much interest in really diving into the scene (or the artist’s other works) will probably enjoy this album, as the samples are entirely on par; but otherwise, there’s little here that separates itself from the overwhelming amount of similar-sounding albums. It’s unlikely that this album would have gotten much attention had it not come from an already-established producer – one who is badly in need of an editor to trim down the amount of released tracks into the absolute best. It’s a problem not-uncommon in vaporwave; it’s great that producers like the sounds so much that they want to release as much as possible to entertain listeners, but they must take care that the abundance of albums doesn’t just become overwhelming and monotonous.
