猫 シ Corp. – Class of ’84

If you’ve heard a 猫 シ Corp. album before, then you probably know what to expect here: smooth jazz and easy listening tracks taken out of context (in a good way!) and repurposed into a new concept. In this album, it’s the concept of celebrating the titular Class of ’84.1 There are a few contemporary R&B tracks thrown in (e.g. “Alexis”), which is different from 猫 シ Corp.’s generally hypnagogic-oriented tracks. There are few screws or other production effects (with the notable exception of the stereo fun on “SPAZZING PEACHES”), but that’s what we come to 猫 シ Corp. for; it’s fun listening that’s easy on the ears – dare I say, easy listening?. “Ocean Beach Highschool Prom 1984” sounds like something that could actually be played at someone’s cheesy, playlist-totally-chosen-by-chaperones prom.2
猫 シ Corp. fans will find quite a few somethings to love. Those who aren’t as into his style might be better off giving this one a pass; there are better intro albums, but already extant fans could give this a span.
