STΛQQ ƟVERFLƟ – MEMƟRY GΛRDEN

Recommendation: ☀☁☁

Ever listen to The Orb? MEMƟRY GΛRDEN is kinda like that. Old-school ambient techno with some small IDM tendencies that are designed to relax and to stimulate the listener at the same time. It came out on two labels upon release – Midnight Moon Tapes and Ailanthus Recordings – along with a short story in pastebin text that describes a man searching for his girlfriend within digital worlds.1

STΛQQ ƟVERFLƟ utilizes some minor trap influences in his music. Although that’s part of what made his music popular within vaporwave, it sounds distracting on MEMƟRY GΛRDEN. The best tracks are ones like “Login // Coalesce” that simply groove along and don’t try to insert the hi-hat “tck-tck-tck-tcktcktck-tck-tck” (e.g. “Hidden // Street”) just for the sake of trap presence. It sounds gimmicky and unnecessary. STΛQQ ƟVERFLƟ is an excellent creator of melody, and his scintillating electronics speak wonderfully all on their own – a great example being “Logout // Fade”, which closes the album with an early Autechre/Incunabula-like feel.

Quick aside: Am I crazy for thinking that the intro bloop to “Memory // Garden” sounds like the Facebook chat notification?
