暗い自然 – Bleed

Recommendation: ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Bleed is a meta-deconstruction of album presentation. Take a twenty-minute ambient song and cut it into tracks of exactly one-minute each, playing on the of the method by which an album is divided into tracks has an effect on the way by which it is consumed or listened. TKX Vault is no stranger to ambient/drone music, so it’s cool to see the label attempt to experiment with the digital format while adding another paragraph to the chapter of dreampunk music. Such experiments are not entirely unprecedented: Skogens Hjärta by Hypothermia visits the other extreme by sandwiching all of the individual songs into a single track. It’s a way to get the listener to think about how they consume media, and it makes it harder to “rate” individual tracks in the conventional sense that media platforms and music magazines try so hard to impress upon albums.1

As for the actual music, Bleed is rather standard ambient/drone music for TKX Vault. The beginning three minutes are a wash of gently overlapping pure tones that lapse into a period of several minutes of almost pure digital silence. The music is easily lost unless played on noise-canceling headphones or loudly in a quiet room. More tones and twinkling return later on, becoming louder at roughly the fifteen-minute mark with some deep bass keys. Half of the track titles are in English and the other half are in Japanese. They describe the gradual death and decay of the individual and of civilization with allusions to war.

The track-split concept is more interesting than the actual music, but it could make for some good furniture music.
