Unwanted Nostalgia Destroyer – Corrupted Memories

Recommendation: ☹

Corrupted Memories is a five-track EP from Unwanted Nostalgia Destroyer. With a name like that, you can expect some classic-style vaporwave or ECCOJAMS that samples from popular media. You would be correct in this expectation. Corrupted Memories starts off with an ECCOJAMS track of “Sk8er Boi” by Avril Lavigne1 that speeds up and slows down at somewhat random moments with a swirly production aesthetic. This formula is used for the rest of the songs: “You Know…” features “Big Girls Don’t Cry” by Fergie; “Goodwill Ballin'” is “Hey, Soul Sister” by Train; “No, No, No, Yes Yes” is “How You Remind Me” by Nickelback, “I’m Not Really Sorry” is “The Reason” by Hoobastank, and “It Actually Does Have a Style” is “Untitled (How Could This Happen to Me)” by Simple Plan.

1The first music video I ever saw. That night is actually a pretty stand-out memory in my mind. I was about ten years old and just stayed up way past my bed-time watching music videos. I distinctly remember “Sk8er Boi”, “Do You Really Love Me” by Gwen Stefani, and “Gotta Get Thru This” by Daniel Bedingfield. Good times, and probably very influential on me.
