Lasership Stereo – Soft Season

Recommendation: ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Soft Season is a brief five-track EP from Lasership Stereo that was released on 3 September 2011, making it part of the initial wave of vaporwave releases. It’s notable for being the third release ever on Ailanthus Recordings, one of the longest-running vaporwave labels with a practically uninterrupted release schedule since 2011. As with most early vaporwave, Soft Season is constructed out of short sampled instrumentals from adult contemporary, pop, and muzak with pitch- and tempo-shifting. It’s a pretty simplistic release that modern listeners might wonder what all the fuss is about when it come to early vaporwave music; it’s important to remember that a lot of releases such as Soft Season sought to evoke nostalgia for the 80s and 90s rather than exercise novel production techniques. Soft Season is a bit too simple to keep up with what’s currently available in vaporwave and its related genres, but those who are looking to round out their retro playlists might gain something from it outside of historical curiosity.
