Recommendation: ✂ (“WARN-U”)

WARN-U is the debut EP from Fatima Al-Qadiri (released under the moniker Ayshay, a Kuwaiti musician who composes music that reinterprets Islamic worship music in the context of electronic music. While not even tangentially related to the vaporwave scene, Fatima Al-Qadiri received not a little bit of attention on image boards and early vaporwave discussion threads due to timeliness of her releases and perceived similarities to vaporwave production. WARN-U was released in September 2011, right when the first-wave of vaporwave characterized by releases from INTERNET CLUB, Vektroid, and 骨架的 was reaching a fever pitch. Additionally, Warn-U was exclusively constructed by pitch-/tempo-shifting Al-Qadiri’s vocals with no other instrumentation, resulting in a milieu not far removed from Oneohtrix Point Never’s Replica or Vektroid’s Shader via the Sacred Tapestry project. The first three tracks are Al-Qadiri’s original productions, with the final track being a “megamix” of the whole EP featuring 808 drums by the duo Nguzgunguzu.
