Junk Maker Sounds releases “FOR PROMOTIONAL USE ONLY- NOT FOR RESALE” by Video Shoppe

Here’s a subgenre of vaporwave that I haven’t heard in a while. FOR PROMOTIONAL USE ONLY- NOT FOR RESALE by Video Shoppe (freshly out on Junk Maker Sounds) is part of the loosely-defined category of “VHS pop”, which considers vaporwave music with a degraded VHS-tape aesthetic that often incorporates samples that one would imagine to find on an infomercial or corporate tape, perhaps even in the previews before a movie. Of course, it’s also closely associated with the subgenres of vapornoise, late night lo-fi and classic-style vaporwave, so it isn’t quite something that’s often thought of as its own thing anymore. This album is full of that uptempo infomercial vibe though, with a solid amount of source tape degradation.

The artists calls themselves “vaporpunk”, which kind of fits for this blend of “mallsoft, hardvapour, punk rock, dance music, and weather channel music aesthetics”, all blended together to create something that’s decidedly eighties and retrofied. FOR PROMOTIONAL USE ONLY- NOT FOR RESALE is available as a pay-what-you-want digital download and for $8 USD on cassette in an edition of fifteen.
